Leeds has developed so much over the last 10 years that it has everything to offer as a golfing break destination. Alwoodley is one of Yorkshire’s finest golf courses and regularly appears in any list of the top 50 courses in the UK. From the moment you arrive at the magnificent club house you seem to soak in the atmosphere as you tread in the footsteps of past golfing greats. Designed by Alister Mackenzie who went on to also design such masterpieces as Augusta and Cypress Point, it’s a fantastic golf course.
Moortown also qualifies as a must play golf club and is another brilliant Mackenzie design. The venue for the first Ryder Cup held in Britain it has hosted numerous tournaments since then and should be on everyone’s bucket list. In the same area as Alwoodley and Moortown, you can find yet another Mackenzie design the delightful Sandmoor Golf Course. Shorter in length but full of challenging holes that require strategy rather than brute strength it’s a gem. Moor Allerton is a 27 hole complex and was Robert Trent Jones first course that he designed in Britain. An undulating course with large and tricky greens it’s quite American in design and offers an interesting contrast to the other courses in the area. If they are the top four courses in the Leeds area, then there is no shortage of other fantastic courses in the area with Headingley, Leeds Golf Club and Scarcroft all worth factoring into any golf tour in West Yorkshire.
